Avery & Brown to continue supporting Mesh Energy for third consecutive year

Russ Avery • November 10, 2022

We are delighted to announce that we have been retained by Mesh Energy for a third consecutive year.

Mesh Energy is a multi-award-winning, B Corp certified sustainable buildings consultancy. We have been working with them since May 2020 - before we officially became Avery & Brown - so they have been a client of ours since day one. Heading into 2023, we will be supporting Mesh with our outstanding brand, marketing and creative support, helping the company to maintain its impressive growth trajectory. The renewed retainer will also see us support the company's recruitment goals as it looks to grow its team of top talent from the world of building performance, renewable energy and mechanical and electrical design.

To learn more about the difference we have made at Mesh Energy in the two-and-a-half years we've been working for them, please take a couple of minutes to watch the video below, in which I interview Doug Johnson, Mesh's founder and managing director. For ease and increased accessibility, I have also pasted the full transcript below the video.

RA: Hi everyone. I'm here today with Doug Johnson, founder and managing director of Mesh Energy. So, Doug - tell us a little bit about Mesh Energy.

DJ: We’re an independent provider of net zero carbon building performance and engineering services to architects, developers and homeowners. We’re based in Farnham in Surrey, but we work on projects all over the UK and internationally.

RA: What was the main challenge you were having before engaging Avery & Brown.

DJ: We were a small, local business which was looking to grow and move on from doing predominantly low-end residential projects to higher-end commercial projects. We were relatively unknown but we wanted to punch above our weight and be more visible to architects and developers. Furthermore, we didn’t have a brand strategy or a marketing strategy, and didn’t know what steps to take or in which order to help achieve our goals.

RA: And what did you feel like while you were trying to solve this challenge?

DJ: I guess I felt a bit frustrated, because I knew I had a great business on my hands, but I didn’t know how best to unlock that greatness and reach the next stage of our growth which would allow us to deliver the type of projects I knew we were capable of.

RA: And Doug - why did you choose Avery & Brown?

DJ: Right away, I loved your direct, straight-talking approach, your experience and expertise of working with other built-environment clients, and your focus of helping sustainable brands. You provided us with a comprehensive plan of what we needed to sort out before jumping straight into marketing execution. Also, I really admire your honest and authentic approach - even right from the way you first contacted me with some advice on a piece of content we’d published. You weren’t looking for a sale, you were just trying to help us out.

RA: When did you realise that our offering was working effectively?

DJ: Well, within five months of engaging you, we had a new brand strategy and a great idea of our goals and how to reach our target audience. You’d also given us a refreshed and more mature visual identity and a new website which was much more tailored to turning visitors into leads. So, by the time you started the actual tactical marketing execution work, I was confident that we’d engaged the right agency for us.

RA: And what does life look like now that your original challenge has been solved?

DJ: Well, two-and-a-half years on from engaging Avery & Brown, Mesh is a fundamentally different business. We’re now delivering the type of high-end commercial projects we always wanted to; the team has trebled in size; we’ve become a Certified B Corporation; we’ve built a network of over fourteen hundred built environment sustainability professionals called Meshwork, which you helped to create for us; and we’re well on our way to becoming the UK’s foremost independent renewable energy consultancy.

Our background & commitment to Plastic Free Farnham Plastic Free Farnham (PFF) was set up as part of ‘Plastic Free Communities,’ a Surfers Against Sewage UK-wide initiative to tackle single-use plastic pollution. Since November 2022, we have supported PFF in working towards making Farnham a plastic-free community by reducing plastic usage in our office. We committed to two significant changes; replacing plastic coffee cups with reusable ones, and switching from plastic-packaged milk and lunches to plastic-free alternatives stored in lunch boxes. We recently reached our gold level champion status , which proves our commitment to reducing plastic in the business. Why we wanted to help them with this pro bono project Every member of the A&B team is passionate about creating a better future for our planet. We recognise the vital work that Plastic Free Farnham is doing to contribute to this goal. Their mission aligns with our values, so it was an easy decision for us to support and amplify their efforts to inspire as many people as possible to get involved. We helped PFF by designing and building a website to help people learn more about the organisation, find out how to get involved, and raise awareness of those already helping to reduce plastic use in Farnham. As a marketing agency, we truly understand the power of a good website and digital marketing. From content to design development to user experience, we knew that our expertise could significantly help PFF achieve their goals. As a current ‘plastic free champion’ we understand the audience better than anyone. The process Finding out exactly what they want and need Advising them on best practices to get the most out of their site Creating wireframes to show design, layout, and navigation of pages Building the website Showing the team how to edit areas of the site, allowing them to do things like upload blogs

London, UK (17 October 2023) Three UK Certified B Corporations have launched a new campaign celebrating 'Better Business Pioneers' – individuals in the workplace driving positive change in the face of inaction from world leaders. The campaign, which launches on Monday 23 October 2023, comes in response to the lack of progress on pressing global issues like climate change, biodiversity loss and social inequality. By spotlighting those already driving change, the campaign aims to counter climate doom, inspire more conscious actions, and showcase how we all have the power to shape a better future. The campaign is a collaboration between Avery & Brown, a sustainable brand, marketing and creative agency, The Better Business Network, an inclusive network for purpose-driven business owners and leaders, and OPEN Media, an out-of-home media owner, operating a portfolio of screens across the entire UK.

This is the first in a series of several blogs looking at key brands in the built environment sector and how they approach impact reporting. We’ll be looking at design, outcomes, metrics, audience, insights and much more. Impact reporting is a crucial activity for each and every organisation, but it can also be daunting and overwhelming for a business embarking on its first. The purpose of this blog series is to show the many ways that your company’s impact can be reported and what to look out for along the way. For instance, is an organisation acting upon its insights? Are they communicating their message clearly? And most importantly of all, are they doing it in a way that is sustainable?
