Today, we wrote a letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres announcing our intention to become a participant of the UN Global Compact.
The UN Global Compact is a voluntary initiative based on CEO commitments to implement universal sustainability principles and to take steps to support UN goals. The role of the UN Global Compact is acknowledged by United Nations member states.
The United Nations Global Compact is supported by the Foundation for the Global Compact, a U.S.-based non-profit that exists solely to provide vital financial, operational and programmatic assistance to the work of the UN Global Compact. The Foundation was created in 2006 on the principle that public-private collaboration is essential to find lasting solutions to pressing global problems.
We recognise that supporting the UN Global Compact is good for business. As the website itself says:
"Corporate and organizational success requires stable economies and healthy, skilled and educated workers, among other factors. And sustainable companies experience increased brand trust and investor support."
We know that businesses can and must make a positive difference in the world and endeavour to be a major part of tackling the climate crisis and associated social injustices. At Avery & Brown, we are determined to move beyond sustainability to become a regenerative business, whereby we give back far more to society and the planet than what we take from them.
We have had confirmation that our application to support the UN Global Compact has been received and will be processed, but that this can currently take four to six months. We will of course publish more posts as soon as we know more.
